Positive Outcome from meeting at CSIRO 24/4/08

posted Friday, 25 April 2008

Just a quick entry to let you know that I and 4 other representatives from our alliance of CSIRO contract scour users, met with the management of CSIRO Geelong, Andrew Reeves (Senator Carr's representative) & Darren Cheeseman (the local Federal Member of Parliament) yesterday. We were pleased with the outcomes of the meeting, for we now have a plan which will assure the continued operation of the scour within Australia. There will be an interruption to contract scouring services whilst the scour is relocated, but customers will now have time to factor this down time into their forward planning.

Senator Carr,Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, has previously said that he believes that our industries have the potential to grow and to play a vital role in the future development of the Australian economy. He has demonstrated this belief, in stepping in to ensure that the CSIRO scour will be available to provide contract scouring of specialty and coloured fibres.

Keep watching for a full report of the meeting.

Great news. It seemed total lunacy for such a resource to be lost. I sent an email using the template you provided a while ago as I would hate to lose access to the fabulous fibres being produced by some of the boutique operators. As a yarn consumer who has become a fibre snob, I thank you for your efforts in campaigning to prevent the shut down.

My thanks for your efforts on our behalf. If the transfer to another location becomes a reality I suspect the cost of setting up the effuluent disposal will be huge. Continious supply of raw fleece to maintain economic viability will be up to us - can we maintain this ?

I'm knitting with some Aussie grown, scoured and spun coloured wool at the moment. Thankyou. It is one of the softest wools I have ever knit with, and it would be a shame to just "let it go". Your work is appreciated.

This is indeed wonderful news and I look forward to hearing details of the new arrangements for the scour. We have support from fibre lovers and knitters around the world. Thanks to Terri of lilypily yarns blog for spreading the word to the Australian and New Zealand Knitters forum and Ravelry. There are more comments on: http://lilypily.wordpress.com/

Yee-ah! That's great. I have been thinking about this a lot over the last several weeks. I really did hold out hope that the gov't would be sensible.
